The Rotary Clubs of Livonia AM and Noon are once again joining forces to carry out a fundraiser to help eliminate Polio from the wor
Please consider coming out and/or making a donation to support this very worthy cause!
In 1979 when the United States became polio-free due to the Salk and Sabine serums, Rotary International came up with the idea of making that a reality for the rest of the world.  It simply didn’t seem right that any child should have to suffer and perhaps even die from a disease that was entirely preventable.
Over the years Rotary has been joined by other partners including the World Health Organization, the Centers for Disease Control, and UNICEF.  Working together they have coordinated an amazing effort using trained medical personnel and volunteers to immunize unvaccinated children, one-by-one, in every country of the world. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has also joined the fight by matching two for one every dollar raised by Rotary for polio eradication.   In 1988 there were an estimated 350,000 cases of polio in more than 125 countries.  As of last year those numbers have been reduced to 33 cases in three countries (Nigeria, Pakistan and Afghanistan).  We are so close to making history by causing polio to be the second disease totally eradicated from the face of the earth!
And yet as long as even one person in this world is contagious with polio, we are all at risk.  Why?  Because an outbreak of polio in the U.S. could be only a plane ride away.   The polio virus has been brought into our country by travelers in the past, most recently in 1993.  The danger is greater to us now, however, due to the increased mobility of people around the world and the decision by some parents not to vaccinate their children.  Unfortunately, outbreaks of measles are already becoming more commonplace in this country.  Let’s make sure that doesn’t happen with polio.
Be a hero and help make history.  Donate today!
