The Carl Riegal Memorial Installation Dinner was held on Monday, June 18th at Laurel Manor in Livonia.  It was an evening of celebrating the accomplishments of the past year with Laura Perlowski as our president and installing David Stechholz as our president for 2018-19.  Laurel Manor provided an excellent venue for this annual event.  District 6400 Governor Elect John Chambers performed the Installation of Dave as President and the new Board of Directors.

The Livonia Rotary Club held its 8th annual Donation Night on Monday evening, February 26 at Laurel Manor. This event is held annually in order to provide dollars for the many worthwhile causes and organizations in Livonia.  It was a very special night to honor recipient organizations. The hard work of the club members over the past year provided almost $24,000, donated to 18 organizations, locally and globally.

A history of the development of Rotary Park in Livonia. Presented by Deanna Gaffney on January 29, 2018

The Livonia Rotary Club was proud to participate in the Livonia Tree Lighting and the first in many years on Sunday, December 3rd., Christmas Parade in the Heart of Livonia.   In addition to over 2,000 participants in the Parade (60-plus local units of all sorts), the estimates given to Ted Davis and Mayor Dennis Wight were 5,000-10,000 people along the 1,1 mile Parade route, 80% within the closest blocks to the Civic Center.  The Parade began on time at 4 p.m., with a 3 p.m. staging at Frost Middle School.  The estimate may be closer to 8,000-9,000.  With great weather, the Parade was enthusiastically-received.  Everyone loves a parade.

Our club was proud to participate and will look forward to participating again next year!
Livonia resident Laura Perlowski has an exciting year in front of her. Laura has recently been installed as the president of the Rotary Club of Livonia. After a 43 year career at the YMCA of Metropolitan Detroit, Laura retired last year having last held the position as District Vice President. Working for a non-profit  all of her adult life, Laura knows the value of volunteerism. She will now focus her energies on leading the Livonia Rotary Club with a set of aggressive goals. The Club, established in 1945 is a fellowship of nearly 40 members from local businesses and educational institutions who combine their talents and resources “to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise.” Keeping with this vision, under her leadership the Club will continue to support popular projects like Kids Against Hunger, Forgotton Harvest, ELVES which is a volunteer program teaching reading skills to children, and orchestrating one of the largest Easter Egg Hunts in the area with 800 children, and their parents attending the annual event.

The Livonia Rotary Club had as their guest speaker, Bill Joyner of Friday Musings, on Monday, October 30th.  Bill spoke in honor of his mother, Geraldine Joyner and Rotary International’s World Polio Day. Bill discussed the trials his mother had living with the polio virus. Mrs. Joyner was a role model of endurance and fortitude, becoming a PTA president, a School Board member for Livonia Public Schools, a Board member for Wayne County Regional Educational Service Area, and a member of the League of Women Voters.  Bill discussed his mother’s medical treatment, including early treatments prior to the polio vaccine.
Rick talked about the work that he and his Rotarian daughter, Julie have been involved with in Tanzania.  The partnership of Rotary, The Canadian World Education Foundation (Tanzania Chapter), and SASCO has given the opportunity to complete projects related to education, business development, water and sanitation and agriculture.

On October 22nd members of our club joined members of other Livonia Service Clubs to help pack 25,372 Meals to help the needy in our community and in other areas of the country and world where the need is identified.

The District held the Governor’s golf outing at Fox Hills on Thursday, September 19th, with proceeds going to funding projects initiated by clubs in the district. Among those are projects in South America, Africa, Asia as well as home. Livonia Rotary was well represented with two foursomes plus 3 Rotarians for dinner.

Our golfers represented the club well, scoring under par. In addition, Dick McDowell won the chipping contest for the second year. Concerns about storms were unnecessary since they woke us up at 3:15 AM on Friday.
